Alt Design Summit: A Mecca For The Creative – Part I

The Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City, Utah for Alt Design Summit(The Grand America Hotel, where Alt Design Summit was held)

I’m still recovering from my silly sinus cold. I am also still digging through the piles of business cards and searching for pictures from the conference. However I must say, the Alt Design Summit was the best conference I’ve ever been to. Ever. The setting couldn’t any be better — snowy Utah in January was just beautiful. The snow on the mountains made a perfect backdrop and the Grand America Hotel had plenty of outlets and fairly reliable internet – a must for us social media folk.

Everyone at the conference had their own unique style and really shinned as individuals. I was lucky enough to go on behalf of Clever Girls and not only meet new bloggers, but also grow personally and professionally. I had several goals going into the conference and I met them all. For the last few months I haven’t felt very inspired. Maybe it’s just the holiday season can be so overwhelming and busy that looking for inspiration was last on my list. Attending Alt was the spark to my creative engine. Inspiration found me.

I’m back to pinning future DIY projects, thinking about topics to blog and vlog about, and gathering ideas of what to paint next. One of my closest friends gave me an easel for Christmas and sitting on it is a half-started painting of Santa Barbara’s West Beach. It’s been collecting dust for over three weeks and before Alt, I had no desire to finish it anytime soon. I do now.

Surrounding yourself with creative people is so important and I think I forgot that. I love my non-creatives but I forget there needs to be balance. I thrive on other people’s energy and am really thankful I met so man  awesome people at Alt. The outfits alone were inspiring! Gosh, even the business cards were inspiring (see below). Alt is truly a mecca for the creative.

Alt Design Summit White Party

Next week I’m headed to the 2012 Alt Design Summit in Salt Lake City, Utah and I couldn’t be more excited! I’ve never been to Utah before and I am going to have three awesome blogger roomies to share this experience with: Chelsey from The Paper Mama, Jess from IROCKSOWHAT and Jensie from Take Two They’re Small.

This may possibly be the best conference yet!

Any suggestions or stores with white pieces this time of year?

Outside Lands 2011 Music Festival Wrap Up

Outside Lands is a successful music festival in San Francisco that I had the pleasure of attending this year with best friend, Ashley Ditto. In its fourth year, the festival brought great music, delicious foods and a cold front. It is summer in San Francisco after all.

Highlights

Ellie Goulding
In a past post, I shared one of Ellie’s videos and have been in love with her album for months since purchasing it after seeing her perform on a late-night talk show a few months ago. The UK artist isn’t your ordinary girl pop singer. She isn’t in your face singing about kissing girls, rude boys, brushing her teeth with booze, or oops’ing that she made another mistake. Favorite song: “Lights.”

Muse
Prior to seeing the band live, I didn’t call myself a Muse fan. Their music often played as background music on the radio and I wasn’t jumping up for joy or anything that they were playing OSL this year. After their epic performance Saturday night, I must give credit where it’s due. These guys sure know how to put on a slow. The lights were out of control. The sound was amazing. The crowd was so into it! Hands down one of the best shows of the weekend.

Girl Talk
This one-man music act was the last performer Saturday night and closed the evening with a bang. I had heard mixed reviews about his shows so I was really pleased in Girl Talk‘s performance.

Macklemore
Seattle hip hop artist Macklemore kicked ass! I saw him in Austin at SXSW back in March was blown away. If I hadn’t left early Friday night, I might have missed his noon set Saturday morning. When he got “in character” for one of my favorite songs, “And We Dance,” the crowd of early risers went nuts!

The Heineken Dome
Talented DJs spun all weekend long including Eric Sharp, Doc Martin, and Live 105’s Aaron Axelson. The Heineken Dome is a music festival staple. House music bumps from inside these two white dome’s where a line could be spotted outside to get in nearly all weekend. Those who want to join the ranks of these talented DJs may want to consider getting hold of some professional dj equipment for themselves so that they can begin practicing honing their craft and get out there to perform for the masses. It was dark inside the Dome and these were the only images I took. I was too busy dancing 🙂

The Fashion
There were plenty of fun styles and furry hats out all weekend. Here’s a handful of OSL fashion recaps via 7x7SF, Refinery29, Free People Blog, SF Weekly, Keltie Colleen, Elle Magazine, and Harper’s Bazaar.

Other great artists I saw that weekend that stood out:
Foster The People –
I missed Foster The People’s set at Live 105’s BFD in June so I was happy to catch a few songs by the “Pumped Up Kicks”guys at the Sutro Stage.
The Limousines –
Local favorite of mine. Always nice to seem them live. Only problem: their Friday evening performance was hampered due to technical difficulties. Those in the front could hear fine, while those in the back were forced to hear “Very Busy People” muffled by the speakers going in and out.
OK Go
I’ve seen this band perform three times now and it’s been the same set each time. I’m looking forward to seeing something new next time.
MGMT
All the kids ran to see MGMT. I’m down with a few of their songs from listening to them on the radio. Those songs seemed to attract the most movement in the crowd. We didn’t watch the whole set because I made my friend run to catch Ellie Goulding.
The Roots –
We didn’t see their entire act, but were satisfied with what we witnessed, particularly “Seed 2.0,” one of my favorite songs.
Major Lazer –
the most accessorized festival go’ers caught Major Lazer and !!! sets. [See furry heads]
John Fogarty
– A little odd to see him the final day but nevertheless his songs are well-known and fun to sing to.
!!! –
After asking other around me, no one seemed to know what their name was. The Three Explanation Marks as Ashley and I called, actually go by the name Chk Chk Chk. They’re a dance-punk band from Sac Town.
Sia
After years of following the Australian “Breathe Me” singer, I finally caught her at the Twin Peaks Stage on Saturday.

Lowlights

Who I missed (unfortunately):
Deadmau5, The Decemberists, Phish, The Shins, The Black Keys, Toro Y Moi, Arcade Fire, Collie Buddz

My poor foot. Thanks to uncomfortable, but stylish boots, my feet suffered Friday night. That was the only casualty of the weekend, however. (TMI? Sorry).

Otherwise, I had a blast and can’t wait for next year! Check out my photo collage below of my OSL weekend:
